Is this thing on...testing one, two, three. It's been a long, long while since I've thrown out my work and words to the world here. Much has happened and through it all the studio has remained busy. The last year or so I've felt like keeping my work on the quieter side. I am happy to have some shows lined up and I keep my website up to date for the most part.
The desire to leave my studio crypt to share a current project must mean I haven't turned into a complete hermit. I am on Day Nine of a 30 sketches project which you can check out here: https://30sketchesproject.blogspot.com. Ok...I am going back underground.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-227225465145524158.post-21027721008774626772016-02-14T11:43:00.001-08:002016-02-14T11:43:41.952-08:00The More I Build You

The More I Build You exhibit opens Thursday, February 18th, 2016 from 6pm-8pm. I'd love to see you there!

Where: Gallery 76102, 1401 Jones Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76102
When: February 18-March 31, 2016 (Hours: Wed.-Sat. from noon-6pm)

Most of the work was completed in 2014-15 during my first year as a graduate painting candidate at Texas Christian University (go frogs!). Also included are a few paintings that were done during my time as a fine art post-grad student in New Zealand in 2011 and as an artist-in-residence at The Rensing Center in Pickens, South Carolina in the summer of 2015. This show holds a special place in my heart, it is a five year journey of my search for the meaning of home.

So this is what you get when you mix imagery of urns and 6"x6" test panels with plaster, graphite, colored pencil, acrylic paint, and some tracing paper. It is a continuation of the vitrine idea on a smaller scale. I am obsessed with the notion than an object can encapsulate a specific space giving it greater value and/or sacredness than the space outside of its parameters. It began with the structure of the home, then moved to vitrines, and smaller still to urns. The plan is to build boxes to place these pieces within not only as a framing/display device but also for portability and protection.
The vitrine collection is growing . Below are the process pics of the latest edition which I lovingly nicknamed The Potbelly. This pet name is a far cry from the description given by the Christie's March 2012 The Opulent Eye catalogue I pulled it from. And I quote…

I'm clearing the decks people! Stowing away all of the paintings, eye candy, and anything else that doesn't have to do with thesis show work. What is the thesis show work you ask? Well…the answer is vitrines. (Vitrine: a glass showcase or cabinet especially for displaying fine wares or specimens.) So far I've been resourcing images exclusively from Christi's catalogues which has some of the finest examples of vitrines in all of the land.

There are about seven months until the show, so things could completely change as they so often do...the vitrine fascination is ever so gently veering in the direction of curio cabinets. (Curio cabinet: encyclopedic collections of objects whose categorical boundaries were, in Renaissance Europe, yet to be defined. Modern technology would categorize the objects included as belonging to natural history, geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art, and antiquities. -Thanks wikipedia.)

Why vitrines? Long story short…
Placing a sea shell inside of an elaborate display case has a completely different feel than placing a sea shell in a shoe box. When inside the case, it takes on a greater sense of value. The air inside of a vitrine is no different than the air outside of a vitrine but that encapsulated space within its glass walls instantly classifies the object as having significant importance.

It is the same feeling we put on a home. (The subject of home is still heavily on my radar.) I've found that it is not so much the physical structure of the house that interests me, but rather the space that is captured within it that I crave to understand. It is the life force that exists inside - like fireflies in a jar.
Another phase of this shift in focus was a studio visit I had this week. Members of a gallery panel swung by to check out some work and I put up the New Zealand paintings (which have been sitting in a box for 4 years) along with the panels I did in South Carolina this summer. Seeing this work together crystalized some things: First, I find it so interesting that the quickest, most potent way to explore home is to leave it. I've done that my whole life. Secondly, to show two bodies of work in my hometown that were done on site in far away places sat very well in my being. It felt like a full circle kinda moment. I hope that the visit will lead to a show about that very subject.
For the past year I've had two bodies of work running parallel to each other - representational depictions of nature and wildlife and abstracted architectural structures. (I've felt split in half.) Last semester I made the decision to focus mostly on the architectural work - it is a new way of working for me so there is a lot to explore and experiment with.

Here I am now - midway through the first week of my final year in grad school which means…THESIS SHOW! Eh-ghads! Translation: I need to start making a cohesive group of work to show in May. So what do I do? I complete two paintings…one meteorite and one geometric-fied cube. At first I felt like I was back to square one, completely torn between which path to take - organic vs. manmade, but then I hung them side by side and realized they were pretty much the same form. What does this mean? I have no fucking idea. But it's taking me somewhere so I'm just going to buckle up and move along.

They were originally part of six panels that I planned to be a cohesive series but three became individual paintings of houses, one turned into a weird chair painting, and these two branched out on their own. They kept inching closer and closer towards each other on the wall, gradually turning into the pair they are today.
Someone Else's Homestead, the series I began during my South Carolina residency this summer, is finito and photographed! I am not exactly sure of the order or orientation the paintings will be arranged in, above is a test shot. What a great sense of closure and now the door in open to fully jump in and begin new work. Here are some general words that describe my experience at Rensing. Next on the agenda is finding a venue to show the series…hmmmm….

To immerse yourself into another person's environment is to become consumed by another person's thoughts, beliefs, their life. Those feelings take time to dissipate after you have left the space in order to resume your own life again. The transition period takes awhile to stumble through, it takes time to absorb the experience and then to leave it behind. But you quickly learn that there is no way to fully resume your previous existence. There is no picking up where you left off because the experience changed you, and maybe in just the most subtle of ways or maybe you see the world entirely different.

It's pretty much the dead center of summer. I've had about six weeks to recover from the first year of grad school and have about six weeks to prepare myself for the second (and final!) year. A good portion of the summer was spent at the residency in South Carolina and I am super happy to report that I finally finished the series, Someone Else's Homestead, that I began while in Pickens. It is a great feeling of closure and has led to a new and smaller series that I began and am really enjoying. I love how one project can unfold into the next. The painting portion of the series is complete, now it is time to photograph and write a proper statement about the work. Better photos to follow!

Vitrine: a glass showcase or cabinet especially for displaying fine wares or specimens.

So I am into vitrines now. Like the Penny portrait from the last post, my interest in vitrines came from a catalog I got at my museum gig. The catalog is filled with urns, artifacts, and beautifully elaborate display cabinets. The interesting thing is that these decorative vitrines are empty so their purpose of housing fine wares is taken away, leaving them to be art objects unto themselves.
The world is enormous with billions of people cruising around on its surface so I find it fascinating when a person crosses your path that you instantly become pals for life with. Lani is one of those rare people. And it is a mathematical fact that if Lani is rad then her dog, Penny, will also be rad. Well, I can attest that Penny is indeed an amazing creature. Lani asked me to paint a Penny portrait and I said hells yes. As always, the journey began with research. And coffee.

My museum gig provided me with a very unexpected direction: A Sotheby's African, Oceanic, and Pre-Coloumbian Auction Catalog. I instantly knew I wanted to collage some of the images from the catalog into the Penny portrait. Why you ask? For three reasons: 1) The artifacts are sacred, rare, beautiful, and valuable just like Penny is to Lani. 2) The rich earth tones of the pieces are similar to Penny's coloring. 3) My pal would never in a million years guess that I would use ancient African artwork in the portrait. WILDCARD!
I thought it was pretty extraordinary that this plant was engineered to hold the morning dew in perfect droplets on each of its serrated edges. High-five to you, Universe. The Rensing homestead has many worn edges, cobwebs, and my favorite…moss and mushrooms.

I was hellbent on finishing this painting series before I left. I wanted to have one neatly packaged project to take home but I was rushing it. I wanted this experience to be over with because it has been very challenging. From the first week it was obvious that my expectations were very different than the reality of this residency and I've been stumbling over that ever since.

Residencies are a gift of time to devote completely to your chosen art form. They are not strictly self indulgent non-stop blissful blocks of time - each one has its own unique challenges. The benefits of a residency have to outweigh the sacrifices that have to be made such as financial strains, being away from loved ones, etc. and as I sit here on my final day at Rensing with my bags packed, the sentence that keeps bubbling up in my mind is: "I left my life for this...was it worth it?". The knee-jerk reaction is that yes it was worth it because it made me realize how exceptional my daily life really is.

So the series is not complete but I am ok with that. Below are the finished four pieces and the final two are well into being 3/4 of the way completed. I am looking forward to seeing this work in my studio - away from the environment that created them. I am glad the final details will be done at home...unhurried. I've been thinking of a name for this series and Someone Else's Homestead keeps surfacing. The subject matter is pulled from another person's personal space, my part was selecting the objects that appealed to me. So am I telling someone else's story through their objects or am I using their objects to tell a story of my own?

At 7:30am Ann and I were on our way to the weekly Pickens Flea Market. What does a local flea market say about a town? Is it a representation of that community or is every flea market in this country similar? These market experiences are more than the objects that are for sale - it is the human exchanges that make the visit rich or sour. Today's experience inspired me to assemble a still life of all the objects I've accrued during my stay here. It is my interpretation of Pickens, South Carolina through found and purchased things.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-227225465145524158.post-54054645596098846992015-06-02T17:57:00.000-07:002015-06-02T17:57:51.580-07:00Days Sixteen and Seventeen

Day Sixteen: This week has turned up the heat, I am hellbent on finishing this series before I leave Rensing. It has become very important that this work be site specific and what that means to me is that the ideas were cultivated here, the subject matter came from the property, and the work was completed on site before the end of the experience. Two panels down, four to go. Yikes.

I was gifted a genuine goat bell from Rensing's director. It is exactly like the ones that make up the beautiful symphony of goodness that I've heard for the last 2 1/2 weeks.

Day Seventeen: My brain is mush. I spent the entire day in the studio and happy to report that the chair painting is finished. Well…96% finished, I am sure I'll do some touchups when I see it first thing in the morning. I have three more days before I ship out my supplies and have three more panels. Eh-ghads I feel the (totally self-imposed) pressure...

To earn my keep here at Rensing I have to put in 8 hrs of work a week. Today that entailed planting peppers. I planted tomatoes and beans last week. The weather has been perfect, I've seen some stellar earth worms in the garden, and I've been using a 50 yr old trowel that I'm pretty sure is super lucky. Grow babies grow!

Above is my favorite tree at Rensing. I gave her a visit today and after saying hello, turned around and headed back the way I came. A little further down the trail I felt pulled to explore the little nook below. A shiny glint of something caught my eye (found out later it was the mineral mica), I crouched down by the water's edge to get a closer look and a wonderful thing happened...

I had one of those rare moments in adulthood when you find yourself doing something you did as a kid, like being hunkered over a stream looking at rocks, and you're getting dirty and it starts to rain but you don't care because you're lost in curiosity. You are connected to that long-since-used child brain that runs on wonder. It is such an important thing to be reminded of.
Day Eleven: Fellow residents, Ann and Lindsay, and I took a 30 minute drive to Twin Falls and it was not only gorgeous but a great recharge for us all. After our sightseeing adventure I moved my living and work spaces to a more private area and it is a glorious thing. I see much work being accomplished in the very near future.

Day Nine: Escape to the woods.

Long strands of uninterrupted concentration have not been common in Pickens. Day Nine started off with a rumbling truck parked outside of the studio. Even though it was impossible to focus on my work I was grateful for this truck because it was emptying the septic tank which has been the cause of being bathroomless and for the most part kitchenless. Today began with the loggers sharpening blades in front of the studio. At this very moment they are using those blades in the nearby woods. But the sounds of falling trees and men wielding chainsaws is muffled by the rotor rooter guy doing damage on the bathroom plumbing. *please fix the plumbing, please fix the plumbing* Annnnd…the electricity goes out…Day Ten, you have reached comical levels.

The building that houses my living space and studio is a constant hive of activity. This activity is not what I had in mind when I was rocketing on a plane towards the rural community of Pickens, SC but I honestly believe if I can find a way to make work here, it will be a new way of working which will inevitably produce a new kind of work which is one of the main reasons for doing residencies in the first place. I most definitely do not want to give the impression that all moments are a struggle, there are many wonderful nuggets throughout the day.
The distractions and disappointments have me hellbent on coming home with a solid series and that energy is conjuring up studio progress that I am excited about.
I started Day Six with these little dudes. There is a perfectly placed log in the middle of the pasture that I have deemed as my morning coffee spot. The rest of the day was a little rocky, there are a lot of distractions which has made working a challenge but Day Seven had me setting my stride.

While sitting on that very log this morning, decisions were made on the subject matter for a series that will go on the pink-painted panels. I grabbed my camera and went in search of reference material - all of which I wanted to pull from interior and exterior spaces and objects from the Rensing Center property. I've paired the photos I plan to use, so here is a "I think I know what I am doing but not completely sure and definitely not ready to articulate my thoughts" sneak peak.
Settling into a new environment can take awhile. The biggest part of that, for me anyway, is squashing preconceived notions of how you anticipated the experience to be and simply letting it unfold organically. Overflowing toilets, noise from logging, and more than expected foot traffic through the studio are examples of what I hadn't fit into the equation. But those things are all just a drop in the bucket when I look back on what I saw today…

I made progress on the panel paintings - unsure of what is next but spent the first part of the morning by the waterfall brainstorming and most of the day sweating in the studio. Let's do this!
This is what the studio looks like first thing in the morning...I dig it. The panels made it safely here, thank you so much US Postal Service. I am still not 100% sure what will go on the panels besides paint so I thought I'd start there - shades of pink…ok brain and heart, if that is what you want. After applying a foundation coat (2nd image) I applied some washes and then sanded each panel (3rd image). That is the process I plan to follow: add, remove, add, remove…

A visit to an enormo flea market provided the excitement for the day. I have never in all of my life been to a flea market this large. I started my day sitting at the big wooden table in the library. I went through my journals and workbooks with all of the words and sketches from The More I Build You series to get a better understanding of the work I want to do now. I still don't know the answer but I am getting closer. Soaking up this environment will help guide me and that includes tonight's lovely dinner gathering. My dining companions consisted of four creative woman including Ellen (Rensing's director), Lindsay and Ann (fellow residents), and Katie (the intern). I feel we have the ability to rustle up some good energy that can help fuel work in the studio.

The day began in the library and ended at a dinner table but there were some great moments in between such as a photo expedition around the grounds. Above is one of my favorite combinations…an indoor/outdoor comparison collage. And then…BABY GOATS!!!!!
